Emily Winters

Worldly Thoughts

I hide behind my beliefs,
Rather than run with the world,
Rather than battle, cloak and dagger,
Or fit to fight with little toy tanks,
Trying to conquer what’s not yours.

So yes, I use what I believe,
What I think,
What I know –
As a shield that collects (and bears the brunt of) the flak that is the world.
The thing is,
I think I’m right.
I know I’m right
And I know you’re wrong,
But everyone’s right and everyone wins and nobody loses except those who die,
Not living long enough (but trying hard enough) to see it blow up in their faces.

I know what to think,
I know what we learn,
Yet no-one told me what to believe,
And now,
I may burn.
